Makeup 101 - The Basics
July 26, 2011

(I love beauty products but I'm not very into makeup myself... nevertheless, I thought it would be a good idea to dedicate a post to the basics of makeup, it might be useful, so here it goes)

Foundation
  • Choosing the right foundation for your skin tone is essential. You don't want your foundation to be lighter or darker than your natural tone, you want it to blend smoothly, almost like a second layer of skin.
  • Before you start applying it, make sure your skin is clean and moisturized.
  • Your foundation must look as natural as possible, so don't forget to apply it also under the jaw line - avoid any harsh lines!

Concealer
  • Use concealer to mask pimples, dark circles under the eyes or any blemishes/redness you might have.
  • Just like the foundation, you can use a brush, a sponge or even your fingers to blend the product on your skin.

Powder
  • Powder is often forgotten, but it can be very helpful to set your foundation and concealer.
  • You can pick between translucent powder and pigmented powder. Both of them will make the facial makeup you applied previously last longer.
  • Re-apply it throughout the day to minimize the shininess caused by oily skin (specially during the summer).

Blush
  • Want to add a fresh glow to your skin? Then go for blush (also called blusher and rouge).
  • You can find blush in a powder form (more common) or in a liquid form. Do not apply too much of it on your cheekbones, you just need a bit of color.

Lipstick/Lipgloss/Lipstain
  • For a wearable everyday look try a nude lipstick; for a more party-ish look try a brighter one. Add lipgloss for a sheer shine (tip: apply it only on the center of your lips to make them look fuller). Lipstain is the better choice if you want the color to stay as long as possible, it won't fade easily.
  • Lipliner can also be very handy for more precise results.
  • And don't forget the lip balm, to keep your lips healthy!

Primer
  • To use before applying eye shadow or any eye cosmetic. It will prepare the skin for the makeup, improve the coverage and the color, and lengthen the amount of time the makeup lasts.
  • Primer can come as a cream or a lotion. There's also specific primers to use on the lips.

Eyeliner
  • Eyeliner is used to define the eye shape, creating different aesthetic illusions. Applying a bit of white eyeliner on the corner of the eyes and on the waterline will make them look brighter and more awake.
  • The pencil is the easiest way to use it. For a sharper line then go for liquid or gel eyeliner - they might be harder to apply, but they're also hold up better.

Eye shadow
  • Wearing eye shadow adds depth and dimension to the eyes, and draws attention to them. Prefer neutral tones for a daily wear and the ones that complement your skin tone and your eye color.
  • They come in many different shades and textures (they may have a matte or a shimmery finish) and can be found in a powder, liquid, pencil or mouse form.
  • The brushes you use are essential to make it work.

Mascara
  • Finally, we can't forget the mascara, that enhances the eyes and can darken, thicken, lengthen and/or define the lashes.
  • Before the mascara, use an eyelash curler. If you want something more resistant go for waterproof mascara.
